My Experience

Dr Jean Annan works in a private psychology practice in the Auckland area. She has extensive experience as an educational psychologist working with young people and those adults who support them to learn and grow. Dr Annan’s previous experience includes educational psychology practice in schools and other education centres, programme co-ordination and teaching educational psychology at Massey University, researching in educational psychology and, with school staffs, facilitating the integration of positive psychology into their regular support for students. She is author of the book ‘7 Dimensions: Children’s emotional well-being’, soon to be released.

I talk about

  1. 7 Dimensions of emotional well-being

This workshop introduces the ‘7 Dimensions’, an appreciative framework for supporting children’s well-being. Participants learn about the implications of experience in each dimension, the impact of the seven dimensions on one another and positive, solution-focused ways of nurturing children’s well-being. The workshop is designed for school staff, parents, psychologists, counsellors and other health professionals who work with children

  1. The neuroscience of anxiety

During the neuroscience of anxiety workshops participants learn about the broad functions of the brain and key processes involved in anxiety. They find out about the role of anxiety, what causes anxiety to become overwhelming and ways to calm the anxiety response. Workshop content is applicable for a wide range of ages, settings and circumstances

  1. Positive psychology in the school and classroom

When parents and teachers take positive approaches to teaching and learning, children’s learning and well-being is enhanced. Positive approaches create safe environments, foster secure relationships and generate purposeful activity. Participants in this workshop learn about positive psychology and some of the many ways it can be applied in children’s educational and community settings.

  1. Integrating narrative approaches with everyday classroom practice

Children live their lives in narratives about self and identity. These narratives reflect children’s experience in their particular cultural environments and influence the way they respond to the circumstances they encounter. The workshops consider pro-active ways of supporting groups of children and individuals to develop positive narratives of self and others. They include practices that teachers and parents can integrate into their everyday interaction with children and positive methods for helping children to adjust stories that are not working for them.
