FOCUS Learning Centre – Napier

About Us

We are teachers. We are passionate about helping children succeed to the best of their ability, and sometimes that requires more than today’s schools environments can provide. As experienced teachers we are unashamedly “old fashioned” in our approach; while society may have changed, we believe children haven’t.

Robin Hicks

Interestingly more and more recent research is reinforcing this belief. Consequently our LEARNING Centre provides tutorial assistance to children who are having difficulty with their school work or those who need some extra help to achieve their goals.

We cater for children underachieving, children who need extra individual attention and children who have given up trying. We can also offer extension work for more able students. The junior subjects tutored are: Reading, Comprehension, Spelling, Writing, Literacy and Maths/Numeracy. At junior secondary level, we can offer support in Maths, Science, and English Writing Skills, and then, a range of NCEA subjects/levels, depending on availability of suitably qualified and experienced teachers.

FOCUS Learning Centre Napier is a member of the In2Learning Group. Talk to us about our senior NCEA options; we can provide help in a number of subject areas at most levels.

How we can help your child

Focus Learning Centre Napier uses a mix of computer, paper-based and hands-on activities, designed to get the best results from every child. Research shows that this multi-modal approach gets the best results, and this is reflected in the results our students get. Our classes are small enough to have one-on-one when it’s needed, but large enough that your child can work independently without feeling like they are being constantly watched. It’s the perfect mix of getting help when they need it but having time to process what they learn.

Physical environment

The premises at Focus Learning Centre Napier are specially designed to be comfortable, quiet spaces with few distractions.  Each child has access to a computer as well as a space to work on paper or hands-on materials.

Our Atmosphere

Our teachers all work hard to develop a safe, productive and friendly working relationship with their children. As a result, kids look forward to coming to tutoring. We have a welcoming space and enjoy the time spent with children and their parents.

Anything else you would like mentioned to parents

We welcome your input. You are the person who knows your child best, so we need you to be alongside us. Your support and confidence in your child helps them grow courage, self-assurance and determination to achieve.

Whether your child is falling behind at school, or wants to achieve excellence, we can help. An initial assessment will provide information that is needed to make good decisions about the best course of action.

Thanks. My daughter had told me her score last night. She is very happy with herself and I can see progress in her as well when we sit down and do her homework. Thanks to you and your team for all your help this year, she is getting more confident each session which is awesome to see as a parent.

L turned 13, started at high school, and missed a few weeks of school due to illness. He lost his confidence at maths, and then lost interest in school. His Mum sent him to us, and L was convinced he was stupid. After working together for a while, he realised he wasn’t ‘stupid’ and suddenly, he just got it. His confidence regained, he was happy back at school and is a lot happier.”

Just to say a huge thank you as my son, who was struggling in maths in his last years at primary, is now excelling. He is now in year 11 and has received an excellence recognition for trigonometry. His confidence and work ethic is something to be proud of.
