About Aspiring Learners

After teaching together in Wellington since 2003, Kristin and Jude established Aspiring Learners in 2020 after seeing a real need for tutoring in literacy and numeracy in Wanaka, Queenstown, and Central Otago.

Drawing on their background as specialist intervention teachers, along with their combined 50+ years of helping students learn, Kristin and Jude plan collaboratively with their tutors to best meet the individual needs of each of their students.

As a team, they are passionate about helping students see themselves as learners and watching them grow in confidence as they make progress.

What Aspiring Learners does

Aspiring Learners provide one-on-one tuition in literacy and numeracy, specialising in working with children who have specific learning difficulties, including Dyslexia and Dyscalculia.

The Multi-Sensory approach at Aspiring Learners means children are not learning using computer programmes and do not rely solely on pencil and paper worksheets. They use lots of colour and movement in their lessons to engage learners. Children are encouraged to move their body while learning new skills! Children and their tutors use bright coloured pens on big whiteboards and use lots of equipment and visual aids to help the learning come to life.

The tutors at Aspiring Learners pride themselves on sourcing and using the best educational programmes and concepts from both the current New Zealand Curriculum and other proven methods to best meet the learning needs of your child. They create structured programmes that draw on a variety of targeted strategies including decoding for reading and phonics, phonological awareness programmes and Numicon for Maths.

How Aspiring Learners help children

When first working with Aspiring Learners, they will undertake a diagnostic assessment with your child, looking for their specific learning needs and how they can best help. This individual assessment gives the team at Aspiring Learners the information they need to tailor their teaching and learning programmes to your child’s needs.

From there, your child will receive one on one lessons, at first using the information gathered from the initial assessment, and then as they work through the lessons together, using the new knowledge the tutor gathers from how your child is progressing each week.

Where the lessons take place

For your convenience, Aspiring Learners offer tutoring services in some local schools, in their own homes and they can even come to you in your family home. Talk with them about how they can best make it work for you!

What we do to make children and their families feel welcome

The tutors at Aspiring Learners are passionate about learning and see themselves as life-long learners. They work with your child each week and reflect on the lessons as they go to refine their plans, making sure your child is getting the teaching that is right for them at the right time.

Your child will feel respected and listened to as an individual and will feel welcome each week and feel comfortable to take risks in their learning.
