About Us
As a Maths/Science teacher who moved into after-school tuition, Sue was constantly looking for ways to help children who had to work harder than everyone else at literacy and numeracy.
Having identified the many factors that can impact on a child’s learning, the next step was to look for ways of dealing with the problem.
An obvious intervention is to suggest an eye test so that children can get prescription lenses if they need them. If only everything was as simple as a physical problem with the eye! Most of the difficulties are neurological in origin, meaning the brain is not working as well as it was designed to.
Most interventions work on one aspect of the brain e.g. visual processing or audio processing, and they take time. Cellfield is different: it works on all aspects of brain functioning, and it makes changes very quickly.
How you help children
The Cellfield intervention begins with a series of tests, including three reading tests.
The intervention itself involves 10 one-hour sessions over two weeks. Participants complete exercises on a computer under the guidance of an expert. Each session is more challenging than the last. Parents are sceptical to hear that their computer-game-playing child will become very tired from one hour a day on a computer, but that is what happens while the brain is being re-wired.
After the intervention, three parallel reading tests are given so that progress is accurately measured. On average, reading skills improve by just on 2 years after the 10 hours. For adults, the average improvement is more than 5 years.
Students are expected to read daily after the intervention. This requires a change in habit and attitude but is possible because it is so much easier now. Confidence and comprehension are much higher and continue to grow the more they read.
Many children are a bit reluctant because they have had so much tutoring and still have to work too hard to keep up. Once they realise that it is not tuition but working on a computer, they are happy to participate, and even enjoy the experience. The whole process is very positive.
Physical environment
The intervention is currently available at the In2Learning premises in Dunedin and Balclutha. Other sites are possible if suitable computers and conditions can be found.
