About Us
Lucy Patson is the Founding Director of Adept Education and the author of the Reaching Competence Mathematics Programme. As a parent to three emerging school children, Lucy realised how differently her children were being taught maths to the way she had been taught and had no idea of these “mental strategies” they were jabbering on about!
Lucy worked with talented maths specialist teachers to replicate the NZ maths curriculum in a series of activity books that sit alongside classroom teaching. The books complement your child’s learning at school, encourage a love for the consistency and logic of maths, and have true-to-life problems in believable, real-life scenarios. They also contain suggested Apps (Apple & Android), paper resources, stickers, certificates and games!
Working alongside Lucy are two tutors. Born in Germany, Franziska now resides in New Zealand. She is a qualified teacher and has recently returned to study to complete her Graduate Diploma in Education.
Lucy is the co-author of the Reaching Competence books. She is mum to 3 primary school aged children and has been in the education arena for over 15 years.
Helping Parents help their children with maths
The mathematics workbooks are more than just fun for kids. They update parents on the curriculum being taught in schools, how children are learning maths and how to help them improve and develop their skills, confidence and competency.
Adept Education tutors children aged 4 to 11 years old and posts you a book for free with any of their packages. Using Zoom (similar to Skype) to connect to students all over New Zealand. Students work in their books at home, while our tutors walk them through the skills they need and answer their questions. Parents are welcome to sit alongside their child or to settle them in and head off to do whatever they need. You simply click on the link we provide you and wait until it’s time for your session.
We will bring you through to the Reach Online Classroom and start your session. There are three options.
- A single on-line tutoring session involves one 25-minute online tutoring session including an assessment of your child’s maths Stage and their future needs
- The half-term online tutoring involves Four 25-min online tutoring sessions including an assessment of your child’s maths Stage and their future needs.
- A full term online tutoring involves Eight 25-min online tutoring sessions including an assessment of your child’s maths Stage and their future needs.
If you have a specific query about your child and their needs, please contact us or check out our website for more information.

I could never get my son to do any extra maths and he didn’t want my help! Now with the Reach Maths booklets, not only am I learning more about the Maths curriculum, but my son is actually wanting to learn more Maths! He picks up the books himself! Winning

I love your books! They are exactly what I have been looking for. Do you have any plans for developing a series for literacy? …

I just want to say thank you for the resources. We have been working on them over the holidays. Even my just turned 5 year old who starts school at the beginning of the year has really enjoyed it.

Thank you! We are really enjoying them and it’s great for me to know I’m on the same page as the curriculum! Looks like there are a couple of other (books) that may be appropriate for (my child) too so probably another order coming soon! Cheers
