Child Behaviour Service

About Us

Child Behavioural specialist, Karen Campbell, is the founder of Child Behaviour Service NZ. By drawing on her years of experience in education, including spending time as a Practice Leader for the Ministry of Education and a Cluster Manager for the RTLB Service, Karen now offers a range of support options for parents, teachers, and professionals.

How you help children:

At Child Behaviour Service NZ, Karen provides specialist parenting support and training to prevent challenging behaviour in the first instance and continuing with a focus on teaching and reinforcing the new desired behaviours.

As each child and family is different, Karen tailors her service to best fit your needs, so be sure to discuss the options with her in your first free no obligation ten-minute conversation.

From there, generally the process will start with a one-hour initial consultation with you to discuss your child and the behaviour patterns you are concerned about. This is most often conducted via a Zoom call. Next, Karen will gather and collate relevant information about your child. This could (but may not always) include a child interview, child observations, a school visit, and reading through any relevant reports you have on your child.

Next, Karen generates an assessment report, which she uses to create a specific behaviour plan – a practical guide of what to say and do to empower you as a parent or teacher with the skills and strategies you need to make meaningful behavioural change for your child or teen.

Karen will continue to monitor the effectiveness of the plan and will work with you to make sure you have proven strategies that work!

My husband and I came to Karen absolutely desperate and feeling very defeated with our son’s behaviour over the past 18 months.  It was so bad that our daughter had withdrawn because of the attention he got through his bad behaviour, and my husband and I were at breaking point.  We couldn’t believe that we had allowed our eight year old son to completely rule the roost after a horrific accident that he was lucky to survive in February 2020.  We had been allocated a specialist to work with our son and help him in his recovery, but for eight or so months, had made no headway and his behaviour kept escalating.

Karen met with us and correctly assessed my son within ten minutes of simply observing his behaviour.  After three visits with Karen, and using a completely different approach to what the previous specialist suggested, we have had an amazing change with his behaviour.  We now no longer constantly walk on egg shells around him and our family is functioning well again.  We have the power back and with the script Karen gave to us, our son knows we mean business.

Karen is a magician, we couldn’t feel more grateful and blessed to have her help us at such a stressful time.  I will be suggesting her services to anyone having behavioural issues with their children as it’s such a quick, easy to follow process, with instant results if you stick to it.

Thank you Karen

Zoe

When I reached out to Karen for help with my child’s tricky behaviours, we were at a pretty low point. I had read books, worked with specialists in the past and had tried my very best, but it wasn’t working. My child was unhappy and his self-esteem was at an all-time low. Karen took what to me looked like a really complex situation and identified the core behaviour that was driving it all. She worked with us to develop strategies that would work for our family and then, when it came time to implement then, was an incredible support. I couldn’t believe it but I saw behaviour change almost straight away. Our home is now calmer, I feel back in control (as I have a plan!) and I am getting to enjoy positive, fun time with all my children. Best of all my child is happier – we’ve given him the structure and rules he needs, the support to work within that and the attention he craves in a loving, nurturing way.

Thanks so much for all your help and support…I’ll be in touch if anything stops going to plan but fingers crossed we’re looking ahead!

Karen from Behaviour Services has helped us implement changes in our family that have made huge positive changes in our home. For years our 7yr old daughter has struggled with anger and tantrums, Karen helped us understand the reasons behind these, she then gave us the tools needed to create new positive behaviours while making herself available for follow up support when needed. I would highly recommend anyone who is struggling with behaviourally issues with there children to reach out to Karen, she has a world of experience and I would highly recommend her services.

Thanks

We came to Karen for some support managing our 3 year olds demanding behaviour and tantrums. We cannot recommend her enough, she is warm, non judgemental, and has a wealth of knowledge about how kids think.

Karen listened to our situation and created a plan which was unique to our family and our child’s personality. We had confidence in her plan, it was very clear, easy to follow and we got instant positive feedback from our child.
Having Karen on hand as we implemented the plan really was the secret sauce, she helped us stay on track and unruffled as our clever child came up with new ways to grab attention.

We have a much happier child, a much calmer house and have learnt invaluable tools as parents for the future.

After struggling with major tantrums and controlling behavior we sort the help of counselors with no improvement. Then we found Karen at Child behaviour Services and in a few weeks we are well on our way to correcting this behavior. Karen was supportive every step of the way.

Karen flew into our lives like a real life Mary Poppins promising to bring harmony and peace to our family. She quickly got my skeptical kids on side, putting them at ease about the process, promising them that they would be much happier. Karen delivers on her promises quickly, it’s no exaggeration to say she has changed our lives. Karen has left us with an easy to use, practical system that can be applied to any sort of behaviour challenge, giving us all the confidence and skills to manage when things are tough. What I love about her system is that it really delivers results, it’s practical and easy to learn – especially in an environment where there may or may not be a diagnosis impacting behaviour. Karen has been warm, kind and understanding. When we’ve been at our most vulnerable she’s walked alongside us as a coach and cheerleader. Karen masterfully worked with my tweens and gave me the skills to head into the teen years with them with confidence. I would encourage anyone who is contemplating working with her to just do it – you and your family will be so much happier for it.

Thanks again for all your help and support, it is hugely appreciated.

Emily

We have recommended Karen Campbell from the Child Behaviour Service, ”Connect, Support Results’ work with some of our families who have identified they need some support with their parenting. The outcomes have been so beneficial for the parents and their children and ensured quite stressful situations have been transformed into positive relationships and outcomes for all. This also has a roll-on effect on how the children engage and self manage at school.  Positive interventions can be game-changers for family dynamics. I would recommend Karen to families in the future.

PAPAROA STREET SCHOOL PARENT EVENING

This evening was a good reminder of the effectiveness of star charts. We have reintroduced these and they have had good effect in the last two weeks with a big increase in compliance before School and at bed time – Dean

I found the talk really useful. Lots of good and simple ideas.

I liked the main rule Karen talked about around doing what your parents ask and when they ask. We’ve implemented that alongside being kind and respectful to each other. Just working on two so it’s not overwhelming. It’s going well and when it doesn’t we remind each other.

We have a point system in place and give small rewards which helps.

The consequences are something I need to work on so they are appropriate for the behaviour. Just need to have them stored in my head. – Lisa

We found this evening really great and well timed for our particular needs.

I think that we found the “learned behaviour” statement the most enlightening.  I think essentially that once we understood that we “created” this behaviour we were empowered to undo the behaviour.

We also found it really useful to know that it was best to focus on the child that was struggling and to get the sibling to support them.

We have started using the concepts that Karen and yourself suggested in a way that suited our family.   Total 100% success.  Our school mornings have been transformed to an easy, calm start to the day.

A great talk.   – Deanna
