Fun in the Sun Counselling

About Us

Evelyn Probert’s counselling journey started after she was widowed with two young sons who were in primary school at the time. Gaining a Masters of Counselling (Hons), membership with the NZ Association of Counsellors and a Member of the BOP Therapy Foundation. Evelyn specializes in School Counselling and Family Therapy.

Having been brought up in West Auckland, surfing and working in many parts of New Zealand and overseas, her experiences of meeting children and families from many cultures has informed her belief that we all seek a sense of safety and belonging in a peaceful community.

Narrative Therapy

Evelyn utilises a Narrative Therapy approach which is a method of counselling that separates the person from the problem and encourages people to rely on their own knowledge and skills to reduce problems that enter their lives.

Creating a safe and supportive environment is important when exploring the ups and downs of life and enables people to draw upon their resources and strengths and feel more encouraged to make changes and find joy in their lives.

When working with families/whanau Evelyn is committed to a client led counselling approach that is culturally-safe and non-judgemental. Seeing family members as a unit and working with specific stories/narratives to achieve positive outcomes, build resilience and improve self-esteem.

Also meeting with children of all ages may include Story Telling, Letters, Puppets, Art Therapy, educational activities and games. At times, Evelyn may draw on her own experience as a facilitator of the ‘Incredible Years Parenting Programme’. The focus is on children’s cognitive, social and emotional developmental stages, communication skills and non-violent discipline. Parents/caregivers also learn behaviour management techniques to promote competence and self-worth in children/adolescents and build a more harmonious environment at home.

Support is also available for children, and families/whanau who are experiencing grief and loss, relationship issues or family violence and trauma, to move forward with new found confidence and awareness

Physical environment

Individuals and families can meet at Evelyn’s home office, at your own home or possibly school, and elsewhere at you and your child’s convenience.
