My Experience

I started my career as a teacher and taught at all levels of the primary school for ten years. Increasingly I became interested in behaviour and why children and young people continue to behave in certain ways. This lead to me training as a Resource Teacher of Learning and Behaviour and I have been fortunate to work in four different areas as an RTLB.

I was interested on how school systems affect the overall cultural climate of a school and practised as a PB4L School-wide Practitioner for MOE, training school management teams on how to implement positive behaviour systems, track behaviour by gathering data and problem solving as well as assessing the school’s implementation level. These included training days and workshops for clusters of schools both secondary and primary schools.

An opportunity came up to be a Cluster Manager of an RTLB service that I took for a couple of years before returning to Christchurch where I worked as a Family Group Conference Coordinator for a short time before joining the RTLB service again in Canterbury.

I have continuously studied over the years to ensure that I am current in my thinking and practice and to keep improving my skills. As well as completing my Master of Education that included papers of counselling, educational and developmental psychology and educational leadership and management I have post graduate papers in applied behaviour analysis. I have studied and practised counselling skills for a year in solution focus questioning techniques using a person centred approach.

I talk about

I am the founder of ChildBehaviourService.co.nz and am a behaviour specialist supporting families to bring about positive behaviour change in the home environment.

I love being able to help support parents and educators to achieve positive results in changing a young person’s behaviour so that it improves lives significantly. Changing behaviour so that it reduces stress and facilitates positive opportunities for a child or young person is an exciting process. It is not about trying all the ‘behaviour strategies’ under the sun in the hope something works. It is about careful assessment that accurately defines the behaviour you are targeting and supporting the significant adults to respond to the behaviour so that it reduces the likelihood of problem behaviour reoccurring. This can be life changing for families and educators.

My key messages

1. Behaviour can be learned.

2. Relationships are key to changing behaviour.

3. Behaviour is communication – it communicates a need.

4. Positive Behaviour needs to be noticed and reinforced.

5. Logical consequences are better than punishment.

6. Changing behaviour is easier when the child is younger.

7. It is the daily interactions adults have with children that really count.
